Once Human

Shrapnel is the build most Once Human players work toward once they leave the early game behind. It's consistently ranked at the top of 2026 community tier lists for endgame PvE, and since September it has two genuinely different weapons to build around. This guide explains how the keyword works, which weapon to pick, and how to set up the rest of your gear so the build actually performs.

How the Shrapnel Keyword Works

Shrapnel is a weapon keyword. When it triggers on a hit, it deals an extra burst of damage to another part of the target's body. The important detail, according to community testing, is that these extra hits can themselves crit and land on weak spots. That's why the whole build revolves around critical stats: the more often you crit, the more of your Shrapnel damage is amplified.

Exact trigger chances and damage percentages vary between community sources, so we're not quoting numbers here. Check your weapon's tooltip in game, which is always the reference.

The Two Shrapnel Weapons in 2026

SOCR - The Last Valor (assault rifle)

The SOCR - The Last Valor is the weapon most Shrapnel guides are built around. It has a chance to trigger Shrapnel on hit, and critical hits improve that trigger rate. It's at its best against single, durable targets, where you can keep up steady fire on a weak spot. None of the 2026 patch notes we checked changed it.

It's usually obtained through the Wish Machine or the Blueprint shop, but availability rotates, so check the current banners in game before planning around it.

MG4 - Conflicting Memories (LMG), reworked in September 2026

The MG4 - Conflicting Memories is the other Shrapnel weapon, and it changed significantly in patch v3.0.6 (September 16, 2026). According to the official balance announcement and coverage from MassivelyOP:

  • Shrapnel now triggers every 6 hits instead of 12.
  • A new upgrade, Memory Storm, periodically deals Shrapnel damage in an area.
  • Each Shrapnel application grants a short, stacking Super Armor effect.
  • Magazine capacity is increased by 40, and Shrapnel damage was raised.

The practical effect: the MG4 now covers the SOCR's main weakness, which was dealing with groups. Don't confuse it with the MG4 - Predator, the LMG that drives the Fast Gunner build.

SOCR or MG4: Which One Should You Build?

SOCR - The Last Valor MG4 - Conflicting Memories
Weapon type Assault rifle Light machine gun
Best against Bosses, single durable targets Groups, waves, open-world farming
Shrapnel trigger Chance on hit, boosted by crits Every 6 hits since v3.0.6
Area damage No Yes (Memory Storm)
Survivability Standard Stacking Super Armor on Shrapnel
Changed in 2026 No Reworked in v3.0.6

If you mostly fight bosses, the SOCR remains the cleaner single-target choice. If you spend more time clearing groups or farming, the reworked MG4 is the more comfortable weapon. Many players will end up crafting both and switching depending on the content.

Against large bosses, keep fire on a weak spot: Shrapnel hits that crit do most of the work.

The setup below is the one community Shrapnel guides have recommended for a long time. The 2026 patch notes haven't changed any of these items, but the guides that list them predate this year, so we'll re-check them once the Isles of Abyss scenario launches on October 21, 2026.

  • Weapon mods: Shrapnel-focused mods such as Shatter Them All, Shrapnel Smash, Shrapnel Souvenir and Shrapnel Carnage.
  • Armor mods: crit-oriented mods such as Crit Amplifier, Fateful Strike, Targeted Strike and Deadshot.
  • Armor set: the Lonewolf set, valued for its crit rate and magazine bonuses.
  • Deviant: Lonewolf's Whisper, which fits the same crit-focused direction.

About Fateful Strike: this mod removes your direct weakspot damage in exchange for more crit damage. On most builds that's a bad trade. On Shrapnel it can work, because the Shrapnel hits can still crit and land on weak spots. Try it, but compare your damage before and after.

Stat Priorities

  1. Crit Rate first. Community guides target roughly 50%. Below that, the build loses most of its consistency.
  2. Crit Damage second. Once your crit rate is solid, every crit, including Shrapnel crits, hits harder.
  3. Magazine capacity third. Longer bursts mean more uninterrupted Shrapnel triggers, which matters even more for the MG4.

Calibration: Decide Before You Craft

Since January 2026, calibration is applied when you craft a weapon and can't be changed afterwards. For Shrapnel, that changes the order of operations:

  • Choose your weapon first (SOCR or MG4) and the content you'll use it for.
  • Pick a calibration that supports what the build scales on, which means crit stats and sustained fire, rather than a generic bonus.
  • Only then craft your final weapon. Crafting first and calibrating later is no longer possible.

We're not naming specific calibration blueprints: the recommendations we found predate the January 2026 change and may not reflect how players build now.

Common Mistakes

  • Switching to Shrapnel too early. With low crit rate, the build feels weaker than a simple Fast Gunner setup. Move to Shrapnel once your gear supports it.
  • Ignoring weak spots against bosses. Shrapnel's extra hits can land on weak spots too, so aiming well multiplies the whole build.
  • Using the SOCR for everything. Since the rework, the MG4 is better for groups and farming. Match the weapon to the content.
  • Crafting before choosing a calibration. It's locked at crafting time, so a rushed craft means crafting again.

FAQ

What is the best Shrapnel weapon in Once Human in 2026?

It depends on the content. The SOCR - The Last Valor is the stronger single-target option for bosses, while the MG4 - Conflicting Memories, reworked in September 2026, is better against groups thanks to its area damage and faster Shrapnel triggers.

Is the SOCR - The Last Valor still good?

Yes. It's still a reference Shrapnel weapon, and none of the 2026 patches we checked changed it.

What changed on the MG4 - Conflicting Memories?

In patch v3.0.6 (September 16, 2026), Shrapnel started triggering every 6 hits instead of 12, a new Memory Storm upgrade added area Shrapnel damage, each Shrapnel application grants stacking Super Armor, and magazine capacity went up by 40.

How much crit rate do I need for a Shrapnel build?

Community guides aim for roughly 50% Crit Rate. That's the point where Shrapnel's extra hits crit often enough to carry your damage.

The Bottom Line

Shrapnel rewards patience: build your crit rate first, choose between the SOCR for bosses and the reworked MG4 for groups, and lock in your calibration before you craft.
